Geographic Information Systems and Science: Today and Tomorrow

Language : English
Date: Sunday April 25, 8:00 AM to 12:00 Noon
Location: Le Gulf Meridian Hotel in Al-Khobar

Fees: 500 SR, including workshop handouts and lunch.

This tutorial is scheduled on Sunday April 25, 8:00 AM to 12:00 Noon at Le Gulf Meridian Hotel in Al-Khobar. Geographic information is defined as information linking dcidcidcilocations on or near the Earth’s surface to properties of those dcidcidcilocations. The technologies for handling such information include GPS, remote sensing, and geographic information systems. Behind the technologies are a set of fundamental, researchable issues whose study has been termed Geographic Information Science. I review these technologies under four headings: positioning, data acquisition, data dissemination, and analysis. Recent research has led to substantial advances in specific areas of Geographic Information Science. I outline five future scenarios that are all technically feasible given current technology, and discuss the research advances that will be needed to make them a reality. In the conclusion I comment on the changing needs of education in geographic information systems and science.

Tutorial Capacity: 30

Presenter:

Dr. Michael Goodchild: Considered the father of Geographic Information Science; is currently the Associate Director of the Alexandria Digital Library, Director of the Center for Spatially Integrated Social Science, Chair of the National Center for Geographic Information and Analysis, and Director of space@ucsb. Mike's many awards include the Prix Vautrin Lud, the Lifetime Achievement Award from the Geospatial Information and Technology Association; the Robert T. Aangeenbrug Distinguished Career Award from the Geographic Information Science and Systems Specialty Group of the AAG; the Founder's Medal from the Royal Geographical Society; and being named Educator of the Year by the University Consortium for Geographic Information Science. He is a member of American Academy of Arts and Sciences and the National Academy of Sciences, as well as a Foreign Fellow of the Royal Society of Canada.

Tutorial 6:

New Mapping Techniques for GIS Applications
Language : English

Date: Sunday April 25, 1:00 AM to 5:00 PM
Location: Le Gulf Meridian Hotel in Al-Khobar

Fees: 500 SR, including workshop handouts and lunch.

The past 20 years have seen an explosive growth in the demand for geo-spatial data. This demand arises from numerous sources and takes many forms. However, the net effect is an ever-increasing demand for data that is more accurate, has higher density, and is produced more rapidly and less expensively. An effective solution to the problems faced in modern data collection campaigns is the integration of various remote sensing and navigation technologies together on a common platform. These systems, which are frequently termed Mobile Multi-sensor Systems (MMS), capitalize on the strengths of the individual components in order to increase the efficiency of data collection. Examples of such systems can be found in airborne remote sensing, airborne laser scanning, airborne gravimetry, street level mobile mapping Ground Penetrating Radar (GPR – which is used un detailed mapping for current buried pipe networks, cables and sanitary structures to avoid destructive drilling) and 3D robotics systems.

The goal of this tutorial is to provide the audience a comprehensive overview of Mobile Multi-sensor Systems (MMS), their components and application in GIS, mapping surface and underground projects and disaster monitoring applications. The material introduced in the tutorial will be emphasized by real-life examples of Systems in land, air, marine, and underground systems.

The tutorial is aimed at students, practitioners, engineer and managers who are new to the field of mobile mapping. The material will be presented in such a way that requires minimal technical background.
